Vertical Site Monitoring (VSM)


Vertical Site Monitoring (VSM) entails use of a UAS to collect information on the condition, status and/or progress of vertical sites. UASs are commonly used to collect still and video images marking the progress of vertical site development. Due to the often-numerous vertical features and potentially constrained locations, UAS ability to launch, land, and fly in constrained spaces is often important for successful execution of this use.

  • Post-Flight Content Production: This use often entails collection of video, photographic or other information to document the condition of vertical work sites. The collected information often requires significant post-flight editing or production to generate products suitable to end users.

  • Operations Over People: This use often requires documenting active worksite with personnel. Executing this use over people that are not under cover or in a vehicle requires explicit FAA approval in advance of operations (for U.S. operators). UAS use for Site Mapping & Survey (SM) focuses on collection of detailed imagery and/or information to enable development of detailed site rendering or models. This use often requires supporting survey equipment and expertise to establish precise survey markers. This use generally requires a high-quality camera and specialized software to collect and process data into required end products, such as maps and terrain models. Interchangeability of payloads and payload capacity are key user requirements for this use.
