SCROLL DOWN

SECURITY | PUBLIC SAFETY

This sector focuses on varied UAV uses associated with ensuring security and various forms of public safety. This sector includes uses executed by governmental organizations, as well as by civil and private organizations in some cases. UAS uses within this sector are commonly executed in relatively constrained areas with nearby activities. Organizations executing the tasks in this sector are often responsible for multiple tasks and therefore require a UAS to effectively execute each of their tasks. Due to the range of potential operating environments, sensor options, and other factors influencing UAS operations, uses in this sector can require differing sets of key attributes.

Search + Rescue

Search + Rescue

UAS uses in this sector enable governmental and civil groups that execute search and rescue (SAR) to more quickly and safely locate individuals or groups that are lost and/or immediate danger. Due to the generally expansive nature of this use, UAS attributes related to operating range and flight time are often priority factors. The potential need for multiple sensor types (visual, thermal, etc.) also emphasizes the ability to easily change payloads.

SECTOR

CONSTRUCTION | ENGINEERING

Primary User Group(s)

  • Governmental public safety organizations assigned and likely to execute search and rescue (SAR) activities (National Park Service, fire departments, etc.)

  • Civil SAR organizations (e.g., Civil Air Patrol)

Objective of
UAS Use

  • Determine location and condition of persons lost, distressed, and/or in imminent danger

Key Operating Environment Features

  • Often large, expansive areas with overhead vegetation requiring long-duration searches requiring extensive flight time through single flight or series of flights
  • Rugged locales with constrained areas for UAS launch & recovery
  • Task execution conducted at relatively constant elevation above vegetation and terrain
  • Key hazards and concerns: Winds, power lines, vegetation (on take-off / landing)

Value Proposition for UAS Use

  • UAS use will enable faster location of and situation assessment for individuals or groups to more quickly and successfully rescue them from imminent danger.

Key UAS LIFE-CYCLE Considerations for This Use

In addition to the priority user requirements identified above there are some use-specific considerations that should inform your development of the UAS life-cycle capabilities needed to successfully execute this use. We provide a range of support services to help you determine what these and other considerations mean for your UAS selection and use. These key considerations include:

  • Diversity of Use Environments: The range of environmental conditions possible for search and rescue, such as urban or remote locales, may require a range of UAS capabilities. Organizations executing this use may need to consider multiple UAS models to meet all potential use requirements and environmental conditions likely.

  • Specialized Sensor Requirements: Due to the need to locate persons or assess conditions often not possible with standard cameras, this use often demands use of specialized sensor packages such as thermal sensors. These packages can add significant cost and potentially weight to the total UAS.

Emphasis on Practical Operating Experience: Due to the use-specific complexities and the need to closely integrate UAS use with multiple air and ground elements, successful execution of this use general requires significant UAS operating expertise and practical search and rescue experience.
